The great journey

The seclusion. The privacy. The views. The dramatic weather.

A One of a Kind Place

I was looking for a special piece of earth to call home. I had no idea where this place would be. I became besotted with the rolling hills of the Coromandel. I also liked the timezone of New Zealand being at the front of the world for my global business activities. I began to research properties.

The Wild Weather

My dream was to find a home by the sea and hear the roaring waves. I love weather so the wilder the weather the better. I saw special ones but not “the one”. One day in 2012, I typed in “cliff house NZ” into Google. Up came Parihoa.

The Real Steps

Although only in my mid early 30’s, I knew from the moment I saw Parihoa that I could spend my life working until I was 60 and never find a place this special. My businesses were young... If I had just seen my dream what should I do? I nervously called Ross Hawkins, of Sothebys, who was selling the property. It had been on the market since 2009. He discussed my details with the owners, Mack and Anne Storey – who were interested to meet.

A Castle on a Hill

The iconic house on Parihoa had been commissioned by the Storeys by internationally acclaimed New Zealander architect, Andrew Patterson. He chose to not domesticate the landscape with gardens so the house would stand starkly. Appreciating the surrounding farm, Andrew designed the house to interact with the animals, especially the sheep.

Mesmerised By the Pounding Rain

A week later, in August 2012, I flew to New Zealand with only an overnight bag on a wild stormy day in the middle of winter, over a delicious lunch at the main house on Parihoa, we immediately hit it off. They were nervous I would be turned off by the wild weather. However, I was mesmerised by the horizontal rain pounding the windows. Mid afternoon, I toured the farm and I have to admit I was slightly overwhelmed. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a working farm with 700 animals as well! I just liked the house and location. 'You have fun with it, just like we did', said Anne Storey, 'and we can help'.

I stayed the night and enjoyed the wonderful company of the Storeys and flew back to Singapore the next morning, with many questions floating in my mind. 'Was I really up for this'?

Adventurous Spirit

In the years beyond 2014, my life would evolve quickly and Parihoa played a part in this, taking a central space. I built my businesses to be able to run without me and even sold some, to be able to spend more and more time in New Zealand. An ultra-runner and adventurer, the more I got into nature, the stronger my connection became with the land.

As my businesses have grown globally and since I encourage virtual working, I've been afforded more life flexibility on being able to spend more time in New Zealand. Parihoa came ahead of its time for me. I worked hard to now be able to enjoy it with others.

Home Sweet Home

By early 2017, with most of my possessions at the farm, as well as my beloved dogs Millie and Lulu, and by now feeling very much part of the local Muriwai and Auckland community, I finally called New Zealand and Parihoa, home.

As my businesses have grown globally and since I encourage virtual working, I've been afforded more life flexibility on being able to spend more time in New Zealand. Parihoa came ahead of its time for me. I worked hard to now be able to enjoy it with others.

Part of my character has been to always have an open mindset. As my core businesses are centred around people, I love meeting people. Having a large international network, Parihoa has become a busy social place with constant visitors from many countries around the world.
